The Zongheng Chinese Input Method for iOS is an innovative text input solution that employs a numeric encoding system consisting of the digits 0-9. This method significantly enhances typing efficiency on compact keyboards, particularly for users who prefer to operate their devices with one hand, thereby reducing hand movement during input tasks.

A standout feature of the Zongheng Input Method is its support for phrase input, having amassed an impressive collection of nearly 800,000 entries in simplified Chinese and around 400,000 in traditional Chinese. This system was developed by the Institute of Chinese Information Technology at Suzhou University and was invented by Mr. Zhou Zhongji, the lifelong honorary president of the Hong Kong Suzhou-Zhejiang-Shanghai Association. Over the years, it has undergone continuous refinement and has gained substantial popularity in various regions including Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hainan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

The Zongheng codec encodes Chinese characters based on their structural forms using a set of ten fundamental strokes represented by the digits 0-9. For any given Chinese character, the encoding methodology involves considering the character as a square and assigning codes corresponding to the stroke shapes at its four corners. The input code for a single character can comprise up to four digits and as few as one digit.

For phrases, the input code is derived from the individual codes of its constituent characters, with a maximum length of six digits and a minimum of one digit.

The Zongheng coding system uses a shape-based encoding method divided into ten stroke categories, each represented by a distinct digit. To facilitate memorization, the mnemonic for stroke encoding is as follows:

• 1 horizontal, 2 vertical, 3 dots and slants,
• 4 crosses, 5 squares,
• 6 angles, 7 eights, 8 nines are small,
• Left slants and hooks both count as zero.
