Usage Instructions (HELP)
- It is an app for memorizing the meanings of given words. (Memorize 1600 words per week)
- No need to squeeze your brain forcibly just because you can't recall an English word. Concentrate for only 2-3 seconds to remember the English word corresponding to the Korean word. There's no need to struggle painfully.
- If you check a word whose meaning you already know, you don't memorize it; instead, you gather the remaining words for repeated practice. Checking 5 words eight times triggers the repetition practice screen. By repeating this process eight times, you complete a unit in a day. Following this method, you can memorize 320 words a day, amounting to 1600 words in five days.
- In the repeat practice screen, if you know the meaning of a word, click "Know," and if you can't recall it well, click "Don't know." If you don't remember it, repeat it until you do and then move on.
- Never be disappointed or upset. Even words you know well are repeated a minimum of three times, and phrases you don't know are repeated until memorized.
Principle of Learning 1 (TED-style Memorization)
- Concentrate for 10 minutes to memorize approximately 40 words and then another 80 minutes to memorize 320 words. Memorize 320 words on Mondays; revise the previously memorized 320 words on Tuesdays while learning the next set of 320 words to reach a total of 1600 memorized words by Friday. Review the 1600 words on Saturdays and Sundays to reach a total of 8000 memorized words in five weeks.
- Use just eyes and mouth without writing. By abandoning the habit of slow word memorization through writing repeatedly, you can break free from the cycle of word memorization. This approach leads to faster memorization speed and improved memory retention.
- Movement of the mouth is essential as muscle movement reinforces memory. Engaging mouth movements stimulate the brain more effectively than when silently memorizing by closing your mouth.
Principle of Learning 2 (The Secret of 8000 Words)
The question arises: "How much studying does it take to master English?" Contemplating this question leads to a simple answer: Without understanding the meanings of words, interpreting them becomes impossible. Research suggests that native English speakers use around 30,000 to 50,000 vocabulary items in their speech. Considering that roughly 20% of these words constitute around 80% of total word usage, by knowing just this smaller set (8000 words), one can communicate effectively in English as a foreign language.
Principle of Learning 3 (Understanding Words from Their Origins)
The gap in vocabulary equates to gaps in English proficiency. The disparity in educational opportunities between high-income and low-income students often stems from differences in English language skills. The multitude of unfamiliar words poses a significant challenge in language acquisition. Effective methods must be found to help students learn English vocabulary.
Principle of Learning 3 (The Secret of Memory)
0.5 seconds represent the minimum length defining actions and thought processes in the brain—a constant that connects two events or symbols into one coherent thought process.
- This pivotal half-second determines cognitive processes and information retention capacity within humans and higher animals' brains.
- The brain shifts from one thought to another or from thought to action every half-second incrementally—facilitating uninterrupted cognitive chain reactions.
The turning point in life where change occurs is when one harbors an earnest desire to alter their life path consciously. This ardent desire translates into consistent effort—if sustained, ultimately reshapes one's life course positively. The key to mastering English lies in an earnest desire to transform one's life through learning the language.
In all transformations, even positive ones, trepidation often accompanies change. Attempts at reaching goals through radical or revolutionary methods tend to exacerbate fears, leading to potential failures. However, employing a small-step strategy alleviates brain's responses to fear and stimulates rational thinking and creativity.
The realization that "My English skills have improved!" is not an epiphany felt continuously but rather like climbing a staircase—suddenly realizing, "Ah! My skills have indeed improved!" Language masters commonly mention experiencing joy after surmounting that initial step—fuelling increased enthusiasm for studies. Don’t give up just because your efforts at studying hard seemingly yield no progress; language studies often entail such challenges—persevere a little longer, and soon that pivotal stair will be ascended joyously.
Our brains (specifically the hippocampus) decide what information to store based on repetition—continuous questioning compels the brain’s attention causing it to get engaged, forming anticipatory responses. The brain enjoys stimulation via questions; thus challenges should be intriguing rather than burdensome; questions must be fun yet concise to captivate attention effectively paving the way for creative thinking and idea generation.
