Li Gongquan (778–865 AD), styled Chengxuan, was a prominent calligrapher and poet of the Tang Dynasty. Renowned for his regular script calligraphy, he was often compared to Yan Zhenqing, forming the duo "Yan-Li." Li Gongquan's calligraphy was influenced by Wang Xizhi in his early years but later he found inspiration in the works of Yan Zhenqing and Ouyang Xun, eventually creating his own style known as "Li Style." His robust and powerful strokes earned him the reputation of possessing both the elegance of Yan Zhenqing and the strength of Ouyang Xun. Li Gongquan was also proficient in poetry, with five of his poems preserved in "Complete Tang Poems" and one in "Additional Collection of Tang Poems."

Li Gongquan's grandfather was a military official, his father held administrative positions, and his brother was a distinguished statesman. Li Gongquan excelled academically from a young age, passing the imperial examination at the age of twelve to become a junior official at the Secretariat.

He served in various roles during the reigns of Emperor Xianzong, Emperor Jingzong, and Emperor Wenzong. Notably, he was frequently appointed as an attendant in the imperial court. Emperor Wenzong even elevated Li Gongquan to the position of Adviser to Empress Dowager when impressed by his integrity and wisdom.

Despite his brother's efforts to secure a more esteemed position for Li Gongquan, he remained humble and focused on his scholarly pursuits. Li Gongquan's unwavering dedication to principles over trivial matters not only earned him respect but also led to further promotions within the imperial court.
