The "Tao Te Ching," also known as "Laozi," "The Classic of the Way and Virtue," and "Five Thousand Words," stands as a pivotal text from ancient China, attributed to the philosopher Laozi, who is often considered a collective representation of the author, annotators, and transmitters. This work is revered among various philosophical schools during the pre-Qin period and serves as a significant source of Daoist thought.

Structurally, the "Tao Te Ching" is divided into two main sections: the upper part concerns virtue (德經) while the lower part focuses on the way (道經). Originally, there were no chapters, but later adaptations distinguished 37 chapters for the Dao portion and 44 for the De, culminating in a compilation of 81 chapters. This text is recognized as the first complete philosophical work in Chinese history, underscoring its enduring influence and cultural importance.
