The goal of Biblical Geography is to study the historical geography of the biblical lands is important for two reasons:

1. These regions have exerted immense influence on our western world. Not only in details like the alphabet, metallurgy, astronomy, medicine, etc., but more fundamentally in the heritage of Judeo-Christian religion.
2. The study of geography is essential for understanding the Bible. The necessary elements for studying geography are:

• The biblical map: an enumeration of cities not in logical or alphabetical order but territorial. The origins of the biblical map can be traced back to ancient Egypt where we have some relationships of Palestinian cities written on pottery fragments, clay tablets, and monumental construction walls.
• The Amarna Tablets: brick-like ceramics. In 1900 BC certain names of Canaanite cities were written on ceramics on vessels intended to be broken. A message was written and then shattered after it was read. Fragments found around 1930 in northern Palestine and Mesopotamia have survived to this day.
• Ostracas: pieces of ceramic jars where texts were written.
• Wall writings: drawings or writings were made, especially at entrances.
• Stelae: stone or ceramic tablets inscribed with important writings.
• Curses texts: figurines with writings (usually curse texts).
• Lists of cities: The Old Testament offers some of these lists that present authentic biblical geography in biblical terms (Gn.10; Jos 13.21; II Chron 11.6-10).
• Prophetic Corpus lists: Amos 1 distributes nations from a geographical standpoint. Acts 3 mentions participants and their cities. Between the Old Testament and us there are other sources such as extrabiblical classical historians: Herodotus, Pliny, Strabo, and Ptolemy. The most significant works presenting ancient Palestinian topography are Eusebius of Caesarea's "Onomasticon" from 330 AD.
• Structured maps: The Madaba mosaic from 600 AD on the floor of an Orthodox church in Transjordan. It is still preserved but incomplete. The Peutinger Table is a world map showing communication routes reduced to a strip measuring 8 meters long by 33 cm wide, divided into 12 sections. The original could be from the 3rd century AD while the copy that has come down to us is from 1225 AD and is kept at the National Library of Vienna.
