Master Hsing Yun (born Li Guoshen in 1927), a prominent figure in contemporary Buddhism, was born on July 22nd in Jiangdu, Jiangsu Province. As the 48th lineage holder of the Linji school of Zen, he is recognized internationally as a Buddhist master and the founding abbot of Fo Guang Shan, as well as the president of the International Fo Guang Federation.

In 1967, Master Hsing Yun established Fo Guang Shan with the mission of promoting "Humanistic Buddhism." Over the years, he has served as the abbot for its first three temples and has founded more than 200 monasteries worldwide. His contributions extend beyond temple creation; he has opened nine art museums, 26 libraries, a publishing house, twelve bookstores, over fifty Chinese schools, and sixteen Buddhist colleges. His literary contributions are significant, with more than 110 scholarly works on Buddhism published and translated into over a dozen languages including English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Korean, Thai, and Portuguese. His efforts have greatly advanced the institutionalization, modernization, humanization, and internationalization of Buddhism.

Master Hsing Yun has also held the position of an executive member of the Kuomintang Central Committee in China. In recognition of his lifelong contributions to the global Chinese community, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Chinese Influence Awards for the years 2012-2013.
