The Importance of Prayer

Prayer is the second of the five pillars of Islam. Belief in Allah's existence and oneness, as well as in the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him), constitutes a person's primary duty. Following faith, observing prayer is paramount among obligatory acts. The obligation of the five daily prayers was established during the night of Miraj, approximately a year and a half before the Hijra.

Prayer serves as an act of worship that purifies the soul, illuminates the heart, and elevates individuals to the presence of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized its significance, stating, "Prayer is the pillar of religion." It provides both spiritual and physical cleanliness, allowing Muslims to cleanse themselves from sin and become deserving servants of Paradise.

In a profound analogy, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: "If any one of you had a river by his door and bathed in it five times a day, would any filth remain on him?" The audience responded in unison: "No filth would remain, O Messenger of Allah!" He then explained, "Thus, five daily prayers are similar; through them, Allah erases sins."

Prayer instills reverence for Allah in hearts and protects individuals from wrongdoing. This principle is affirmed in the Qur'an: "Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing."

A Muslim not only bears the obligation to pray but is also responsible for teaching their children to pray. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised: "Command your children to pray when they reach seven years old." When parents educate their children about prayer at this age, they become accustomed to it by the time they reach maturity.

Moreover, a short stanza encapsulates the essence of prayer:

• Five times a day—morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and night
• Stand for prayer, let all impurities flow away
• The hearts of those who pray are filled with light
• The faces of those who neglect prayer lose their radiance
• Prayer is approaching Allah in His presence
• It is conversing with Him and attaining His light
• Perform ablution early to be clean
• Getting accustomed to cleanliness starts in childhood
