For women, ovulation usually occurs around 14 days before the next menstrual cycle. Starting from the first day of the next menstrual cycle, counting back or subtracting 14 days gives the ovulation date. The ovulation day plus the 5 days before and 4 days after are considered the fertile period.

For example, if a woman has a 28-day menstrual cycle, and her last menstrual cycle started on December 2nd, then the next cycle should start on December 30th (adding 28 days to December 2nd). Subtracting 14 days from December 30th lands on December 16th as the ovulation date. The ovulation period, including the 5 days before and 4 days after, would be from December 11th to December 20th.
