Kinh Thánh is a term applied to sacred texts of various faiths. These texts were often written during the formative periods of Jewish and Christian beliefs; leaders of these communities believe them to be divinely inspired writings from God to depict the authoritative history of the relationship between God and His people.

The Hebrew Bible, also known as Tanakh, consists of three parts: the Law of Moses (Torah), the Prophets (Neviim), and the Writings (Ketubim or Ketuvim). Christians collectively refer to them as the Old Testament to distinguish them from the New Testament written by Jesus' disciples (and their successors). According to Christian tradition, the Old Testament is divided into the Books of Law, History, Prophecy, and Wisdom. The New Testament comprises four Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, Pauline epistles, other apostolic writings, and Revelation.

Tanakh consists of 24 books, but Protestant denominations count them as 39 books. The Catholic Church and other Christian denominations include additional books in the Old Testament, taken from the Septuagint of Judaism since they retained these books after they were omitted by Protestant reformers. The New Testament was formed after Jesus' birth, containing 27 books, canonized in the 4th century and accepted by most Christian churches. (See Bible Canon).

The Bible is perhaps the most influential set of books in human history. The number of printed Bibles surpasses any other book. The Hebrew Bible as well as the Christian Bible has been translated multiple times into more languages than any other book. The complete Bible or parts thereof have been translated into over 2,100 languages spoken by 90% of the world's population. Since 1815, an estimated total of over 5 billion complete or significant portions of the Bible have been distributed, making it the best-selling book of all time.

The term "Bible" is also used for sacred texts of non-Jewish and non-Christian faiths; hence Guru Granth Sahib is commonly referred to as the "Sikh Bible."

Many educators argue that the Christian Bible has deeply rooted itself in Western culture to the point that "anyone, believer or non-believer if unfamiliar with the values and teachings of the Bible will be culturally illiterate."

The term "Bible" in Greek is βιβλια (biblia), meaning "books," which originates from βυβλος (byblos) meaning "papyrus," derived from the name of ancient Phoenician city Byblos, a major exporter of papyrus.
