The Sukhmani Sahib, comprising 192 hymns, is a significant work recorded in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the central scripture of Sikhism. Authored in the 16th century by Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji (1563–1606), the fifth guru of the Sikhs, it is recorded on Ang 262 of the scripture.

This scripture is organized into 24 sections, known as ashtpadis, with each section containing eight hymns. The term 'ashtpada' originates from Sanskrit, denoting a verse that consists of eight metrical feet.

Recitation of the Sukhmani Sahib is a common practice among Sikhs, taking approximately 90 minutes to complete. It is performed both in gurdwaras and at home, often involving congregational participation. The name 'Sukhmani' itself translates to 'peace of mind,' as it combines the words ‘sukh’ (peace) and ‘mani’ (treasure). The recitation is believed to promote tranquility for both the individual and the wider community.

It is customary for individuals to cover their heads and remove their shoes before engaging with any bani from the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The respect afforded to the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, regarded as a living Guru by Sikhs, underscores the reverence with which the teachings of the Gurus are held within the faith.

It is important to note that Gurbani generally employs a gender-neutral reference to God. However, translating these concepts into English may inadvertently introduce a gender-specific bias due to linguistic constraints.
