About the Palace Museum
Established in 1925, the Palace Museum was built on the basis of the imperial palaces (Forbidden City) of the Ming and Qing dynasties as well as artifacts from the court collections. As a large comprehensive national museum focusing on palace architecture, ancient art pieces, and court cultural relics, its collection includes the world's largest and most complete wooden palace complex as well as treasures handed down from the Ming and Qing eras. Subsequently enriched through national allocation, social solicitations, and private donations, the museum has developed an extensive collection covering various areas including ancient paintings, artifacts, court relics, books, and archives with a total of over 1.8 million precious items. In 1961, approved by the State Council, the Palace Museum was designated as one of China's first key heritage protection units. In 1987, it was listed among UNESCO's "World Cultural Heritage" sites.
