Within China's vast sea of diverse genres of historical works, biographical histories are referred to as "official histories" and hold the foremost position among various historical texts. During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty when compiling the "Complete Library in Four Sections Catalog," the content narrated in biographical historical works was considered orthodox history. It was decreed that twenty-four historical works from "Records of the Grand Historian" to "History of Ming" were to be regarded as "official histories." Since then, "official histories" have become the exclusive name for the "Twenty-Four Histories."

The Twenty-Four Histories refer to the twenty-four historical works written by various ancient Chinese dynasties.

"Official Histories" appear for the first time in the "Book List" from the Sui Dynasty: "The world has writings that model Ban and Ma, considering them as official histories."
