The "Book of Songs" is a collection of poems that originated over 2500 years ago in the late period of Chinese slave society. It marks the beginning of ancient Chinese poetry and is the earliest anthology of poems. It includes 305 ancient poems from the 11th to 6th centuries BC, with six poems known only by their titles, reflecting the social landscape from the early Western Zhou period to about five hundred years into the Spring and Autumn period.

The author of the "Book of Songs" is unknown, and it was compiled around the Spring and Autumn period. Legend has it that it was collected by Yi Ji Fu and edited by Confucius. Initially referred to as "Poetry" or "Three Hundred Poems," it was later revered as a Confucian classic during the Western Han dynasty and became known as the "Book of Songs."

The "Book of Songs" is categorized into "Airs," "Elegant Verses," and "Odes." The "Airs" consist of folk songs from various regions during the Zhou dynasty; the "Elegant Verses" represent the formal music of the Zhou people and are further divided into "Lesser Eulogies" and "Major Eulogies"; the "Odes" are ceremonial songs performed at the Zhou royal court and aristocratic ancestral temples, divided into the "Zhou Odes," "Lu Odes," and "Shang Odes."

The content of the "Book of Songs" is rich and reflects aspects of Zhou society such as labor and love, war and servitude, oppression and resistance, customs and marriage, ancestral worship and banquets, as well as celestial phenomena, landscapes, animals, plants, etc., serving as a mirror to the social life of the Zhou dynasty.
