New Concept Book Two (Study Guide)

There was a student who started learning English from junior high school. Through three years of junior high, three years of high school, and four years of university, a total of ten years were dedicated to studying English. Throughout the entire learning process, he felt like he was carrying a big basket on his back. Whatever content the teacher taught, he would throw it into the basket. After ten years, his basket of English knowledge became extremely heavy, as if he had learned a lot. However, when the need arose to use a certain knowledge, he couldn't remember which corner of the basket it was hidden in. The result was carrying a heavy basket but still not being able to understand and express himself. Later on, he followed someone's advice and went through Book Two, Three, and Four of the New Concept English (as he already had a foundation, he started from Book Two). After finishing studying them, he came up with a metaphor. The textbooks of New Concept English are like a bookshelf with many compartments, clearly classified and with an easily accessible index. Each compartment contains different grammar knowledge, tightly interconnected. After studying this way, all knowledge becomes exceptionally clear, when you need certain knowledge; you instantly find it in the corresponding compartment.

I find this metaphor vividly introduces the characteristics of New Concept English to us. The three well-known features are systematicity, engaging content, and practicality. For instance, in the second book divided into four units - each unit supplements new content on top of reviewing previous material - forcing us to revise and learn simultaneously so that our minds are very clear.

For each lesson in Book Two study sessions include several sections: vocabulary, key sentence structures, text (including challenging points), additional content (such as proverbs, tongue twisters), where we comprehensively practice our listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating skills from various aspects. In text and vocabulary explanations, we will horizontally and vertically summarize, compare, associate, and enrich knowledge for everyone.
