Master Sheng Yen (1930–2009)

Born in Nantong, Jiangsu in 1930, Master Sheng Yen became a monk at Mount Wolf in 1943 but later served in the military during wartime. After ten years, he returned to monastic life. Following six years of intensive meditation in Meinong, Kaohsiung, he pursued higher studies in Japan and earned a Ph.D. from Rissho University. In 1975, he was invited to propagate Buddhism in America. He founded Dharma Drum Mountain in 1989 and established the "Chinese Zen Dharma Drum School" in 2005.

A philosopher, writer, and internationally recognized Zen master, he was honored by Taiwan's Global View magazine as one of the "Fifty Most Influential Figures in Taiwan over the Past Four Hundred Years." His extensive writings surpass one hundred works spanning Chinese, English, and Japanese languages. He received numerous accolades including the Chungshan Literature Award and the Presidential Cultural Award.
