Historically, Buddhist Qimen Dunjia is said to have been passed down from Master Seng Yih during the Tang Dynasty. Unlike mythological origins proposed by traditional schools, Buddhist transmission offers a more compelling explanation rooted in doctrinal symbolism: the use of Bhavacakra diagrams correlates with Mandala symbols held by Samantabhadra (the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara) in Vajrayana practice. The numerology underlying the Nine Palaces sums to fifteen—coinciding with figures associated with Avalokiteshvara’s many arms—symbolizing formidable protective power against temporal crises (“kalpas” of 1500 years).
