Assalamu Alaikum.

Among the Muslim ummah established around the world, there are four main schools of thought:

• Hanafi School of Thought
• Maliki School of Thought
• Shafi'i School of Thought
• Hanbali School of Thought

In different regions, each school of thought is followed. What is a school of thought? Why is it important? Is it obligatory, recommended, or a Sunnah? These topics have sparked many debates in recent times, and it is noticed that most followers do not have a proper understanding of the lives of the leaders of all these schools.

The leader of the Hanafi School of Thought is Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah be pleased with him).

The leader of the Maliki School of Thought is Imam Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).

The leader of the Shafi'i School of Thought is Imam Shafi'i (may Allah be pleased with him).

The leader of the Hanbali School of Thought is Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (may Allah be pleased with him).

They were all followers of the Sunnah and Jamah and had pure beliefs. These leaders were uncompromising on the truth until their last breath. They are our righteous predecessors. They embodied the true teachings as prescribed by the Prophet and his companions. Therefore, studying their lives is crucial for us. Their creed was based on the Quran and authentic Hadith - 'Aqeedah. Their 'Aqeedah was that of Prophet Muhammad and his noble companions - one unified creed. Yet, without properly understanding this, we are following blindly, adjusting our beliefs as we wish, which is not appropriate for a true Muslim. To understand the four schools of thought, it's essential to know about these four imams.

Alongside the four Great Imams of Islam, we have delved into the biography of Imam Bukhari as well. Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy upon him) is the compiler of Sahih al-Bukhari and widely respected among Muslims worldwide for his collection of Hadith. Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy upon him) wrote several works including Al-Fiqh al-Akbar. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy upon him) authored Musnad Ahmad. One notable work by Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy upon him) is Al-Muwatta.

In Bengali language, there are no authoritative books on the biography of these four renowned imams. If available, they do not reference their roles and contributions to following the Sunnah. Most narratives are rather fictional tales.
