Born Abou al Hussayn Mouslim ibn al Hajjàj ibn Mouslim ibn Ward an Naysàbùri, he hailed from an Arabic tribe, which is reflected in his surname, Al Quchayri. The name An Naysàbùri is derived from his place of residence, Neshapur, a prominent city in Khorasan. His birth date is uncertain, but it is believed to be around the year 204 or 206 AH.

Muslim’s formative years were spent in an environment conducive to the study of beneficial knowledge. Neshapur was a vibrant center for Islamic legal sciences, home to numerous teachers and students. His father was among those dedicated to scholarly pursuits, likely encouraging Muslim along this intellectual path from a young age. By the age of 12 (or 14), he was actively participating in hadith sessions.

Two years later, during a pilgrimage while still a youth, he encountered scholars in Mecca and others during his travels. His pursuit of hadith led him on numerous journeys throughout Khorasan, Iraq, the Hijaz, Sham, and Egypt, motivated by the dispersed nature of hadith transmitters.

Imam Muslim passed away on a Sunday evening in the month of Rajab in the year 261 AH in Neshapur. He was approximately 50 years old at the time of his death. May Allah bestow His mercy and pleasure upon him.
