WHERE CAN I SEE THE COMMERCIAL DOLLAR EXCHANGE RATE?

What we usually see on television and news websites is the commercial exchange rate, but if you are preparing for a trip, you are always surprised by the much higher value charged at exchange houses and conversions made when buying packages for travel abroad. To give you an idea, the tourist dollar exchange rate can be up to 8% higher than its commercial rate!

The explanation for today's tourist dollar being more expensive than the commercial one is simple: to buy and sell the tourist dollar, you need to have the money in hand, which incurs higher costs for exchange houses, such as transportation, insurance against theft, and operational profit, which increases the price of the currency to compensate for these expenses. On the other hand, commercial transactions are carried out virtually, electronically (via SWIFT).

The issue is that the margins applied to the commercial rate can differ between exchange houses. This is because since 1999, Brazil has been operating under a Flexible exchange system - before that, the exchange rate had a pre-set value against the Real -, meaning it can be freely negotiated by institutions approved by the BCB to buy and sell the currency.
