Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi, born on August 19, 1863 (Rabiu al-Sani 5, 1280 Hijri) in Thanabavan, Uttar Pradesh, India, was bestowed with the name "Ashraf Ali" by Hazrat Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza Panipati. He hailed from a noble lineage connected to Hazrat Umar (R.A.), while his mother was from the family of Hazrat Ali (R.A.). As the eldest among his siblings, he faced the profound loss of his mother at the tender age of five.

Recognized as a prominent scholar of the Deobandi school, a social reformer, Islamic researcher, and eminent personality, Ashraf Ali Thanwi earned the title "Hakeemul Ummah" (Spiritual Healer of the Ummah). He founded the organization Dawat-ul-Haq to promote knowledge of Sunnah among Muslims. His contributions to spiritual training and Tasawwuf have drawn thousands to seek guidance from him, both in the Indian subcontinent and beyond.

During his childhood, he memorized the entire Quran under the direction of Hafiz Hussain Ali (R.A.). He received initial education in Persian and Arabic in his village from Hazrat Maulana Fateh Muhammad Thanwi (R.A.). In 1295 Hijri, he enrolled at Darul Uloom Deoband to pursue advanced Islamic studies and completed his education there at the age of 19.

By 1300 Hijri, he commenced his career as a teacher at Faiz-e-Aam Madrasa in Kanpur, receiving a modest monthly salary of 25 Rupees. His vast knowledge earned him the epithet "Bahrul Ulum" (Ocean of Knowledge).
