The《Kangxi Dictionary》is a classical Chinese lexicon compiled during the 55th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1716). Under the editorial leadership of Zhang Yushu, a grand academian and Minister of Revenue, and Chen Tingjing, a senior scholar and Minister of Lì (Officialdom), the dictionary was developed based on references from Ming Dynasty sources such as Zihui and Zhengzi Tong. Its compilation aimed to provide authoritative interpretations of Chinese characters, including various pronunciations and meanings, with quotations from classical texts to support entries. Notably, during the Qing Dynasty, laws stipulated that scholarly examination answers must conform to the standards set by this dictionary, which significantly influenced Chinese scholarly practices. Since its initial publication, the dictionary has been reprinted numerous times and remains a cornerstone reference in Chinese linguistics to this day.
