■ What is the Imaginary Science Institute?
The worlds of movies, manga, and anime are overflowing with astonishing phenomena. Giant monsters breathe fire and rampage, soccer balls burst through goal nets, spaceships make a round trip to the Large Magellanic Cloud in just one year... All are entertainment-filled phenomena born out of human imagination.
At the same time, these are all scientifically intriguing events. Why can't humans breathe fire or break through goal nets? What would actually happen if we attempted a year-long journey to the Magellanic Cloud? Contemplating these questions is truly engaging in science.
The Imaginary Science Institute was established in 1999 to scientifically verify the "world of imagination created by human creativity" and to convey the allure of both imagination and science. In addition to publishing the "Imaginary Science Reader" series and engaging in various media activities, we continue our diverse efforts such as sending out "Imaginary Science Library Newsletter" via fax to high school libraries nationwide and collaborating with Eikou Seminar to distribute "Rika Yūda's Daily Science" via video.
Newton pondered, "Apples fall down, but why doesn’t the moon?" laying the foundation for scientific systems like universal gravitation. Einstein imagined, "What would you see if you chased light on a train moving at the speed of light?" constructing the theory of relativity. Human imagination propels scientific advancement, while science leads imagination to realization - with this belief, we continue our research into imagination and science today.
