Old Testament and New Testament

Old Testament

The Old Testament, for most Christian people, is the first part of the Christian Bibles. It contains the Pentateuch, as well as other series of historical, wisdom, and prophetic books. In total, the Old Testament consists of 46 books, which along with the 27 books of the New Testament make up the Bible with its 73 biblical books.

The terms Bible and Old Testament (which presupposes the existence of a New Testament) were never used by Hebrew-speaking Jews, nor by some Christian denominations.

The Jews divide the books of the Tanakh into three distinct groups: Torah (the Law), Nevi'im (the Prophets), and Ketuvim (the Writings).

Jehovah's Witnesses prefer the expression Hebrew Scriptures to refer to this collection of books.

The Old Testament or Tanakh began its canonization in 450 BC and completed its canonization at the Council of Yavne (96 AD), by the Sanhedrin of the first century. Although the Council of Yavne was more of a confirmation than a canonization. The last book to be canonized was the book of Daniel, in Yavne. When it was debated whether Song of Solomon was simply a love idyll, Rabbi Akiva defended it by saying that Solomon was speaking inspired by the Holy Spirit, like a Midrash (metaphorical romance) between God and the people of Israel. For similar reasons, the acceptance or rejection of Ecclesiastes and the book of Esther was also debated. The Sanhedrin considered Esther and Solomon to be endowed with the spirit of prophecy. Rabbi Hanina (1st century) had a difficult task aligning the theology of the book of Ezekiel with the Law of Moses. Thanks to that, in the end, the book was also accepted into the canon.

New Testament

The New Testament is the part of the Christian Bible composed of a canonical (authorized) set of books and letters written after the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. It has been referred to as such since Tertullian in the Christian Church. In contrast to the Hebrew Tanakh, called by Christians the Old Testament, Christians, with the exception of so-called Messianic Jews, do not have the New Testament in common with Jews.

The use of the term "testament" comes from the Hebrew word berith (covenant, pact, agreement, or provisions between two contractors), through the Greek diatheke, and Latin testamentum. Some authors present the names Old and New Testament, which designate the two main sections into which the Christian Bible is divided, as a result of an interpretation error of the word diatheke, which means "desire" or "will," and also "agreement" or "convention." According to this criteria, diatheke in Greek would refer to God's old and new covenant with humanity rather than to the Scriptures themselves.
