CIPHERS

The Caesar and Vigenère ciphers belong to a category known as substitution ciphers, where each character is replaced by another. Decoding these messages requires possessing the secret key; however, it is also feasible to decrypt a message without prior knowledge of the key through a method called brute force.

CAESAR CIPHER

With the Caesar cipher, a numerical secret key (k) is utilized to rotate or shift each character by k positions. The letters wrap around from A to Z and vice versa as required. For instance, employing a key of 1 to encrypt "Hello world!" would result in "Ifmmp xpsme!" To decrypt this ciphertext, simply shift the characters in reverse.

VIGENÈRE CIPHER

The Vigenère cipher enhances the security of messages compared to the Caesar cipher by utilizing various keys for shifting characters. These sequence of keys are referred to as keywords, where each character denotes the amount by which the corresponding character in the original message will shift (A and a represent 0, B and b represent 1, Z and z represent 25). Encrypting "Hello world!" with the keyword "Squirrel" will yield "Zuftf nscdt!"
