The word Torah comes from the Hebrew word Torah, which can be translated as "direction", "teaching", or "law" (Proverbs 1:8; 3:1; 28:4).

The above examples show how this word "Torah" is used in the Scriptures.

Torah is used to refer to the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

This collection of books is also known as the Pentateuch, which means "fivefold volume" in Greek.

Since it was Moses who wrote the Torah, it is also called "the book of the law of Moses" (Joshua 8:31; Nehemiah 8:1).

For Judaism, the Torah is the Law. According to Jewish tradition, it encompasses the entirety of divine revelation and teaching given to the people of Israel.

According to Hebrew tradition, the five books of the Pentateuch were written by Moses, who received direct revelation from God on Mount Sinai, which is why it is defined as the "instruction given by God to His people through Moses."

Torah can also refer to the laws that the Israelites received on specific matters, such as "the law [Torah] of the sin offering," "the law concerning leprosy," and "the law concerning the Nazirite" (Leviticus 6:25; 14:57; Numbers 6:13).

At times, Torah refers to the guidance and teaching provided by parents, wise individuals, or God Himself (Proverbs 1:8; 3:1; 13:14; Isaiah 2:3).

Hebrew has its origins influenced by several Semitic root languages, such as Aramaic (ancestors and derivatives; the same ones that gave rise to Arabic, for example), as well as being greatly enriched by Babylonian and Phoenician.

Hebrew is a language with almost 30 centuries of written history. Obviously, over such a long period, the language has undergone processes of linguistic change that make Old Hebrew and Modern Hebrew more like related languages differing in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary rather than the same language.

• The laws of the Law of Moses (Exodus 24:3).

The Hebrew alphabet, sometimes referred to in its Hebrew form as "alef-bet" (אָלֶף-בֵּית), is the series formed by Hebrew consonants. It consists of 22 characters, five of which have a different form at the end of words. It is used to write the Hebrew language, Yiddish, and, to a lesser extent, Judeo-Spanish.
