Buddhism, with a history of over 2,500 years, was founded by Prince Siddhartha Gautama from the ancient Indian Shakya clan (now within the territory of Nepal) (referring to Buddha's birth). Western countries generally believe that Buddhism originated in India, where efforts are made to shape the image of it as a "Buddhist holy land."

This misconception has led many to believe that the Buddha was born in India, causing discontent among the Nepalese people. Buddhism is also one of the three major religions in the world. Buddha means "the awakened one." Buddha is also known as Tathagata, Honored One, Omniscient One, Perfectly Enlightened One, Well-Gone One, Knower of the World, Supreme One, Controller of Men's Destinies, Teacher of Gods and Men, the Buddha. Buddhism emphasizes human spiritual and moral progress and enlightenment.

The goal for Buddhist followers is to practice Buddhist teachings in accordance with the methods realized by Siddhartha, discover the truth of life and the universe, ultimately transcend life and death and suffering, end all afflictions, and achieve ultimate liberation. Around the beginning of the common era, Indian Buddhism started to spread from India to China and through long-term dissemination and development, it formed Chinese Buddhism with distinct Chinese national characteristics.

Due to the differences in the time of introduction, routes taken, regions involved, and differences in national culture and social historical backgrounds, Chinese Buddhism has formed into three major sects: Han Buddhism (Sinicized), Tibetan Buddhism (Tibetan language-based), and the Theravada Buddhism in Yunnan Province (based on Pali language).
