What are parables?

A parable is a simple and objective fictional narrative that communicates a message or teaches a lesson. Jesus' parables cannot be compared to any other existing parable due to their immense originality and purpose.

Generally, Jesus' parables have a very clear central message, yet at the same time, they are also very profound in their applications so that only true followers of the Lord Jesus can fully comprehend them.

Why did Jesus teach in parables?

Jesus used parables to proclaim the Kingdom of God, that is, to announce something new that was being revealed in his own ministry.

Jesus teaching in parables also fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament. This is because parables increase understanding about the kingdom of God for those who have a genuine relationship with Christ, but at the same time, for those who do not, parables end up increasing their confusion and ignorance (Matthew 13:11-16).

Therefore, we should think of Jesus' parables as doors that open for some but close for others. Thus, parables both reveal and conceal.
