Okey 101 is played with four players in multiple rounds. The aim of the game is to finish the game with as few points as possible. The player with the lowest score at the end of all rounds wins the game. Points are determined by the numbers on the remaining tiles (e.g., a red 3 = three points, a black 11 = eleven points). The game can end when there are no more tiles to draw from the deck or when one of the players completes their hand. The game consists of a certain number of rounds (e.g., 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 rounds). Each round continues until one player finishes their hand.

After determining a dealer from the players, the dealer distributes 21 tiles to each player and takes 22 tiles for themselves. The remaining tiles are placed on the table with one tile facing up, which determines the joker (OKEY tile). The game is played counterclockwise. The player who deals the tiles starts the game and discards a tile before drawing. Then, the player to their right takes their turn. Each player whose turn it is either draws a tile from the deck or takes the last tile discarded by the previous player. After drawing a tile, if the sum of the player's sets in hand reaches 101, they can open their hand (place their sets on the table). When a player opens their hand, they place their sets next to the other series of tiles on the table. If a player cannot open their hand, they discard a tile to pass their turn. The player whose turn it is must always finish their turn by discarding a tile on the table, even if they have opened their entire hand.

In order to open your hand, you must have at least 101 points. To open your hand, you must have 3 or 4 sets of different colors with the same number (e.g., black 5, red 5, and blue 5) or sequential sets of the same color (e.g., red 7, 8, 9). A set must consist of a minimum of 3 tiles. In order to add tiles to the sets on the table, a player must have opened their hand with a minimum of 101 points. During the same game, you can both open your hand and add tiles to the opened sets. If a player takes a tile discarded by the previous player, they must use that tile. If a player who has not yet opened their hand takes a tile, they must open their hand and one of their opened sets must include the tile they took. The taken tile cannot be left in your hand. If the taken tile cannot be used to form a set or open your hand, it is placed back and one tile is drawn from the deck. No penalty points are given for this mistake.

Another way to open your hand is to collect at least five pairs of tiles. A pair refers to two similar tiles. If a player opens the game once with a pair, they cannot open a normal set again in the same game. However, they can add tiles to the sets on the table opened by other players. If all four players open a pair in the same game, that round is canceled and a new game begins. No player receives penalty points in this game.
