The Zizhi Tongjian, commonly referred to as Tongjian, is a comprehensive chronological history compiled by Sima Guang during the Northern Song dynasty. Spanning 294 volumes and approximately three million characters, this monumental work took 19 years to complete. It records historical events starting from the twenty-third year of King Wei of Zhou (403 BC) through to the sixth year of Emperor Xianzhao of the Later Zhou (959 AD), covering an extensive period of 1362 years across sixteen dynasties. This includes notable states and kingdoms such as Qin, Han, Jin, Sui, Tang, the Seven Warring States, the Three Kingdoms (Wei, Shu, Wu), the Sixteen Kingdoms, the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, cementing its significance in Chinese historiography.
