The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child, originally called Teaching Children, was written by Li Yuxiu, a scholar during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. The content is based on the sixth item of the "Studying" section of Analects of Confucius, emphasizing the principles that students should adhere to at home, outside, in social interactions, and in their studies. It was later revised and renamed The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child by Jia Cunren during the Qing Dynasty. It records 108 words and deeds of Confucius, consisting of 360 sentences and 1,080 characters. The text is structured with three characters per sentence, with sentences arranged to rhyme melodically. Divided into seven parts: "be filial at home, be respectful outside, be cautious, be trustworthy, show love to all, be close to benevolence, study when having spare time." The term "student" has various meanings as pointed out by Deng Weidong from the Beijing Association for Popularizing Traditional Culture: at home referring to children; at school to students; at a company to employees; in an organization to subordinates; in society to citizens; in the inheritance of Chinese culture to younger generations. "Rules" refer to norms, manners, guidelines, and regularities.

Since 2006, Li Yaojun, Chief Editor of Harmony China Network and a professor at the Confucius Institute in Taiwan, has been studying and revising The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child, creating a modernized version that moves with the times. He has conducted numerous lectures on The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child nationwide. Through comprehensive discourse on family education, school education, and social education, he emphasizes the importance of studying and practicing traditional Chinese culture for the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Educational Significance: The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child had a certain impact on education during the Qing Dynasty, becoming a widely circulated children's reading material towards the end of that era. Advocating important values such as respect for parents, ethical conduct towards others, and polite manners, it shares similar influence with works like Three Character Classic, Hundred Family Surnames, and Thousand Character Classic. The text emphasizes virtues such as filial piety, respect for elders, trustworthiness, love for all beings, closeness to benevolence and learning when possible. It stresses various standards of conduct with a strong focus on moral cultivation.

Cultural Impact: The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child serves as an important source for acquiring knowledge of Chinese culture. Through its easy-to-remember structure and moral teachings presented in rhyme scheme form, it intertwines historical knowledge and idiomatic expressions.

Author's Biography: Li Yuxiu (1647-1729), courtesy name Ziqian, styled Caisan, was born in Longxing Village, Zhouzhuang Village in Newjiang County in Shanxi Province during the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. He lived until his 83rd year during the Yongzheng period. Li Yuxiu was known as a prominent scholar and educator in early Qing times. With a humble life experience and gentle demeanor, lacking legendary tales often associated with scholars. In his youth, Li Yuxiu studied under local scholar Dang Binghe and engaged in nearly twenty years of learning journeys. Failing civil service examinations led him to renounce official career aspirations to become a lifelong scholar dedicated to academia. He extensively studied works like The Great Learning and The Doctrine of the Mean, founding the Dunfu Study Hall where he lectured. Revered by many followers who left footprints outside his lecture halls. Taiping County Imperial Censor Wang Huan sought his advice several times due to his profound knowledge, leading to him being respectfully addressed as Master Li by others. Throughout his life he only obtained the degree of "Xiucai" (successful candidate) and primarily focused on teaching. Reflecting traditional expectations for children’s education coupled with his teaching experience resulted in writing Teaching Children, later revised by Jia Cunren into The Standards for Being a Good Student and Child.
