The practice of Buddhist Qimen Dunjia has been transmitted through a unique lineage that integrates elements from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, each emphasizing different aspects of life and philosophy. Confucianism focuses on governance and societal harmony; Taoism emphasizes self-cultivation and spiritual cultivation; Buddhism aims at the liberation of sentient beings and achieving completeness. To help others, Buddhists believed in protecting oneself first, breaking the ancient curse that practitioners could not enjoy long life while practicing divination. This diversity in perspective underscores the different starting points and focal points of each tradition.

Historically, Buddhist Qimen Dunjia is said to have been passed down from Master Seng Yih during the Tang Dynasty. He inherited previous traditions, promoted Buddhism, and authored the "Taiyi Ju Dun Jia Jing." While later generations primarily recognized his work on the Tang calendar system "Kaiyuan Dayan Calendar," the true essence of "Taiyi Ju Dunjia Jing" has remained within Buddhist circles. Over the following 1,300 years, notable Buddhist masters significantly contributed to its development: Liu Bingzhong of the Yuan Dynasty, who assisted Kublai Khan in establishing Beijing and was a teacher to the renowned scientist Guo Shoujing; and Yao Guangxiao of the Ming Dynasty, the national master who helped Emperor Yongle ascend to power and was buried in Fangshan with imperial honors. These masters exemplified the non-sectarian attitude towards transmission—Master Seng Yih and Yao Guangxiao both studied other doctrines to deepen their understanding—highlighting that Buddhist Qimen Dunjia has evolved through continuous refinement across generations.

Practitioners describe Buddhist Qimen Dunjia as straightforward in establishing its configurations; it does not require memorizing lunar months or dates—simply aligning the four pillars of year, month, day, and hour yields the formation. Its calculation involves summing the Heavenly Stems and dividing by nine to derive the palace number. Even novices can learn to set a configuration quickly, whereas other schools may take months or years merely to grasp this fundamental step, let alone interpret it.

This method employs Heavenly Stems (Yang) and Earthly Branches (Yin), symbolizing radiant Buddha light dispersing calamities—a highly Yang approach driven by celestial principles. It emphasizes turning misfortune with the concept of "hidden three palaces," consequently revealing more detailed information about issues and enabling clearer insight. When life presents difficulties, recognizing excess Yin energy allows practitioners to respond with Yang methods to restore balance and alter one’s suffering.

Precision is a hallmark of Buddhist Qimen Dunjia—it distills complex configurations into highly concentrated information surpassing other schools’ diffuse data. Its energy regulation adheres to the flood-control philosophy of Yu the Great: guiding energy rather than combating it—aligning with Traditional Chinese Medicine’s principle that “traveling through channels alleviates pain,” thus producing swift results. Notably, it is unique among Qimen variants for providing detailed annual forecasts, whereas others often rely on post-event analysis using celebrity cases, lacking real-world applicability.

Unlike mythological origins proposed by traditional schools, Buddhist transmission offers a more compelling explanation rooted in doctrinal symbolism: the use of Bhavacakra diagrams correlates with Mandala symbols held by Samantabhadra (the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara) in Vajrayana practice. The numerology underlying the Nine Palaces sums to fifteen—coinciding with figures associated with Avalokiteshvara’s many arms—symbolizing formidable protective power against temporal crises (“kalpas” of 1500 years). These “kalpas” imply opportunities where expert practitioners can resolve 1% of life’s calamities. Historically, during chaotic eras, Bodhisattvas like Samantabhadra are believed to incarnate to assist rulers in unifying and saving populations from suffering—a pattern repeatedly validated in Chinese history.

Features of Buddhist Qimen Dunjia include its rapid configuration setup, use of concealed palaces for protection against negative energies ("Eight Gods"), reliance on a system that transcends rigid structural constraints without prioritizing hierarchies, avoidance of future risks through precise predictions (“accurately preempting”), Feng Shui applications such as inducing auspicious shifts ("Buddha hand moves"), multi-person and multi-issue assessments within a single configuration, insights into past lives informing present circumstances, and confidence that Buddhist blessing surpasses temporal advantage by transforming impossibilities into realities. Its detailed annual forecasts are remarkably precise—so much so they are seen as revolutionary compared to traditional Bazi astrology.

Central to its methodology are flexible yet sophisticated mechanisms involving life-and-death gates within configurations—temporal nodes vital for decision-making. The unique secret scripture "Xuantian Yuzhi Jing" (120 phrases, 840 characters), when used alongside an individual’s Bazi chart for completing configurations, produces resilient outcomes infused with millennia of Buddhist energy imparting lifelong benefits.
