Mr. Nan Huai-Chin is a renowned scholar with a solid reputation both domestically and internationally. He was born in 1918 into a scholarly family in Yueqing County, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. Now 85 years old, Mr. Nan received a classical education in his youth and studied various schools of thought during his early years.
During the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Mr. Nan, then a young man, joined the military and served in the southwest border regions. Upon his return to Sichuan, he taught at the Central Military Academy and Jinling University. Known for his exceptional intellect and independence, Mr. Nan would often spend his weekends wandering through famous mountains and rivers with straw sandals and a bamboo staff, seeking out esteemed monks and scholars.
He once secluded himself in Daping Temple on Mount Emei for three years, immersed in studying the vast volumes of the Tripitaka scriptures. He later traveled to Tibet, meeting with eminent figures in Tibetan Buddhism and delving deeply into the various sects of Tibetan Buddhism.
After leaving Tibet, he relocated to Kunming, initially lecturing at Yunnan University before becoming a professor at Sichuan University. Following the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he returned to his hometown before retiring to Tianzhu Mountain in Hangzhou and Mount Lu in Jiangxi, dedicating himself to academic pursuits.
After moving to Taiwan, he taught at National Chengchi University, Fu Jen Catholic University, as well as other universities and research institutions. Mr. Nan imparted knowledge in Japan, the United States, Central America, and other countries. In recent years, he has resided in Hong Kong, contributing significantly to cultural exchanges between mainland China and Taiwan.
Mr. Nan Huai-Chin is well-versed in Chinese classics and history, has a profound understanding of both Eastern and Western cultures, possesses extensive knowledge, and has authored numerous works. Particularly noteworthy is his approach of combining classics to explain the texts of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism—a method that interweaves ancient and modern references with deep insights and lively humor. His remarkable achievements in promoting traditional Chinese culture have earned him admiration from readers across mainland China and Taiwan.
