The "Random House Unabridged Dictionary," widely regarded as the most comprehensive and detailed English-Japanese dictionary since its original publication, has now been developed into an iPhone/iPad application. The app offers robust search functionalities, including headword, phrase, and usage examples, enabling rapid access to over 324,000 entries — encompassing headwords (including derivatives), idiomatic expressions, and approximately 126,000 usage examples supplemented with tens of thousands of new examples unique to the American edition. Furthermore, it features a kana search function, allowing around 70,000 headwords to be searched using hiragana or katakana, facilitating easier retrieval for Japanese speakers.

The application incorporates various innovative features designed to maximize usability within such an extensive dictionary. For instance, tapping on any English word within the annotations instantly triggers a within-app search, streamlining cross-referencing. Additional enhancements include a flexible search mechanism insensitive to differences in case, spacing, hyphens, slashes, and even accent marks in foreign terms—allowing users to input queries more naturally without concern for exact formatting. The phrase and example searches are versatile; for example, "come up for air" can be searched by any component: "come," "up for," or "for air." Tapping on a search result navigates directly to the relevant section with the term highlighted for quick reference. Usage examples are supplemented with Japanese translations to facilitate comprehension.

Other notable features include in-application linking: tapping embedded English words within definitions opens a pop-up for immediate dictionary lookup. There are also convenient jump functions within entries to access parts of speech, source titles, or etymology sections swiftly. The app supports an editable bookmark system that allows users to add, delete, and organize bookmarks, alongside a history function storing recent 100 searches. Users can adjust font size across three levels (small, medium, large) via pinch gestures.

Additionally, the app includes audio pronunciations of approximately 50,000 words by native speakers, primarily reflecting contemporary American pronunciation—though this may differ from the pronunciation in printed editions due to differences in recording sources.

Regarding the content of the "Random House Unabridged Dictionary" (2nd Edition): It encompasses an extensive 324,000 entries including derivatives and inflections. It expands upon the American edition by adding 30,000 headwords and 50,000 definitions. The usage examples total about 126,000 — incorporating tens of thousands of examples exclusive to this edition. The dictionary covers vocabulary relevant to modern science and technology fields, contemporary news media, classic literature from various eras, academic fields, and specialized terminology necessary for comprehensive understanding.

This dictionary provides detailed explanations of contemporary English usage including colloquialisms, slang, idioms as well as proper nouns like product and person names. It features broad coverage not only of British English but also of English variations from other parts of the world.
