The Amedes application provides access to rainfall data derived from the XRAIN (X-band MP Radar Network) operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It is designed to support disaster prevention activities related to increasing incidences of localized heavy rainfall, such as guerrilla rainstorms, which often lead to water-related hazards and landslides.

Key features of the application include:

• One-minute interval radar weather images.
• Playback function for continuous rain cloud images (note that loading times may vary depending on network conditions).
• Search capability for precipitation data spanning the past two weeks.

Supported regions encompass:

• Sapporo area
• Tohoku region
• Kanto region
• Chubu region
• Kinki region
• Chugoku region
• Shikoku region
• Kyushu region
• Okinawa
• Some areas may have limited coverage or display issues.

The app provides various meteorological images, including:

• Weather warnings and advisories
• Radar images showing precipitation, thunderstorms, and tornado occurrence probabilities
• Weather forecasts and temperature data
• Weather charts
• Amedas observational data including temperature, precipitation, wind direction and speed, sunshine duration, and snow depth

The regional coverage includes nationwide data as well as specific areas such as Hokkaido (northwest, east, south), Tohoku (north, south), Kanto, Koshin, Hokuriku (east, west), Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu (north, south), Amami Islands, Okinawa, Daito Islands, and Miyako & Yaeyama Islands.

The application also allows users to pin meteorological information on the map, displaying data such as weather conditions, temperature, atmospheric pressure, precipitation volume, humidity, and wind direction directly on the geographical interface.

Satellite imagery from the Himawari satellite is available in multiple modes: infrared (black-and-white and color), visible light (black-and-white and color), water vapor (black-and-white and color), and cloud-top height enhancement (available only at higher update frequencies).

Meteorological statistical images include accumulated rainfall over 1, 3, 24, 48, and 72 hours; maximum wind speed; maximum instantaneous wind speed; highest and lowest temperatures; comparison with previous year; and previous day’s temperature data. These are based on images published by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The application also features short-term weather forecasts for today and the next three days along with a ten-day weekly forecast. Additionally, it displays hazard level maps indicating areas at risk of landslides and flooding due to heavy rain or inundation warnings.

XRAIN is a state-of-the-art radar network developed under the auspices of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It provides observations at five times the frequency and sixteen times the resolution of conventional radar systems, enabling near real-time distribution of high-precision rainfall estimates. This advanced capability significantly enhances early detection and monitoring of localized heavy rainfall events such as guerrilla rainstorms.
