Metropolitan Dimitry of Rostov (in the world Daniil Savvich Tuptalo; 1651 — 1709) was a Russian church figure, bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church, spiritual writer, and preacher. In 1757, he was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church; his memory is celebrated on September 21 (Julian calendar) and on the day of the Assembly of the Siberian Saints (June 10). Dmitry of Rostov gained fame as a prolific church author — compiling collections of saints' lives, most notably in four books — "The Menology." The work on the lives of the saints began on May 6, 1684, and continued for 20 years.

Lives is a genre of religious literature that describes the lives and deeds of saints. Lives were created after the death of the saint but not always after formal canonization. Lives are characterized by strict content and structural limitations (canon, literary etiquette), distinguishing them significantly from secular biographies.
