The Great Buddha Sitting-Head Lankāvatara Sutra, also known as the Lăng Nghiêm (Lankāvatara Sutra), has been widely recited and studied across all Mahayana Buddhist schools in China since the Tang Dynasty, often serving as a basis for subsequent centuries' annotations and explanations. The Lăng Nghiêm Sutra holds particular reverence among those interested in the unification of the Three Teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism) during the Song and Ming Dynasties.

Over time, the sutra has garnered significant attention from Zen masters, including masters such as Trường Thủy Tử Duệ of the Song era, Hám Sơn Đức Thanh of the Ming era, and Tuyên Hóa (1918-1995), who have contributed extensively to its dissemination and interpretation.

It is common to confuse this sutra with another text comprising two volumes known as the Thủ-lăng-nghiêm-tam-muội kinh. The Thủ Lăng Nghiêm Kinh delves into teachings regarding the nature of Mind and meditative states, including the proclamation of Bạch Tản Cái Đà La Ni. Conversely, the Thủ-lăng-nghiêm-tam-muội kinh addresses fundamental Mahayana doctrines, focusing on the formidable Samādhi (great concentration) where Bodhisattvas can manifest ubiquitous activities—educating beings and overcoming Māra with ease—while seemingly entering Nirvana in one place but actively guiding sentient beings elsewhere.
