The narrative unfolds against the tumultuous backdrop of the Southern Song Dynasty, a period marked by historical significance and conflict. Set in the autumn of 1126, the story begins with the massive invasion of the Northern Song by the Jurchen Jin Dynasty, culminating in the infamous "Jingkang Incident," where Emperor Huizong and Emperor Qinzong were captured. In March of the following year, Zhao Gou, the ninth son of Emperor Huizong, proclaimed himself emperor in Nanjing (present-day Shangqiu, Henan), and soon relocated to Lin'an (modern Hangzhou, Zhejiang), clinging to survival amid a fractured empire.

During this turbulent era, esteemed patriotic generals such as Yue Fei and Han Shizhong rose to defend the remnants of the Southern Song, engaging in fierce battles to safeguard their homeland. Less recognized is the valiant effort of numerous martial artists who also took up arms in defense of the Song dynasty, willing to sacrifice their lives for their sovereign. The events lead up to 1139 when news arrived of the assassination of Jurchen Prime Minister Da Lian, marking a pivotal moment laden with both intrigue and patriotism.
