Jalal al-Din Muhammad ibn Bahā' al-Din Muhammad ibn Hosseini Khatibi Bakri Balkhi, commonly known as Rumi, is considered one of the foremost mystics and poets in Afghanistan. His heritage is traced back to the esteemed families of Balkh, with claims that his lineage reaches Abu Bakr, the first caliph of Islam. His father was related to the royal lineage of Sultan Ala al-Din Muhammad Khwarazmshah through his mother, earning him the title Bahā' al-Din.

Born in 604 AH in Balkh, Rumi's early life was influenced by his father's prominence among the scholars of the time. Due to the tension with Sultan Muhammad Khwarazmshah, Rumi's family left Khorasan in 609 AH. They journeyed through Baghdad to Mecca before settling in Al-Jazira. After nine years in Malatya, he was invited by Sultan Ala al-Din Kayqubad Seljuk, a mystic himself, to reside in his capital city of Konya. At the time of their migration from Khorasan, Jalal al-Din was just five years old. His father passed away in Konya in 628 AH.
