Sonan Termedhi - Sunan al-Tirmidhi

The "Sunnah of al-Tirmidhi," formally titled "The Concise Compilation of the Sunnah of the Messenger of God, Knowledge of Authentic and Weak Hadith, and What is Understood from Its Application," presents a significant contribution to the study of Hadith.

Al-Tirmidhi has diligently compiled Hadith concerning legal rulings, similar to the efforts of Abu Dawood. However, he goes further by distinguishing between authentic and weak narrations while also documenting the views of the Companions, their successors, and jurists across different regions.

Sheikh Ahmad Muhammad Shakir noted in the introduction to his critical edition of Sunan al-Tirmidhi that this work stands out for three key characteristics not commonly found in other Hadith collections, be they the six major ones or others:

1. Conciseness in Narration: Al-Tirmidhi skillfully condenses the various chains of narration, usually mentioning only one while hinting at others. Sheikh Ahmad Shakir remarks that after narrating a Hadith related to a specific topic, al-Tirmidhi cites the names of the Companions from whom others have narrated in that domain, regardless of whether these narrations align with or differ from his. This practice illustrates his expansive knowledge and exceptional retention.
2. Diversity of Legal Opinions: Frequently, al-Tirmidhi highlights differing opinions among scholars regarding legal issues and often references their evidences. He also mentions conflicting narratives on certain matters. This aspect is crucial as it underscores a primary objective of Hadith studies: discerning authentic from weak narrations for use in legal reasoning and practice.
3. Attention to Authenticity and Critical Analysis: Al-Tirmidhi meticulously evaluates the authenticity of each Hadith, detailing its status as either sound or weak. His thorough examination of the reasons behind the classifications and his analysis of the narrators make this work an exemplary application of Hadith science principles, particularly in the field of hadith criticism.
