The book "Hayatus Sahaba," which translates to "Lives of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)," delves into the biographies of the beloved companions of the Prophet. Authored by Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Kandhalvi (may Allah be pleased with him), a prominent figure in the Tabligh movement and the son of Maulana Ilyas (may Allah be pleased with him), this work stands as a notable contribution to the literature on ashab (companions) of the Prophet.
Among distinguished works documenting the lives of the companions, "Hayatus Sahaba" and "The Life Stories of the Companions of the Messenger" are particularly acclaimed. Upon reading this book, one can vividly imagine and comprehend the nuanced life experiences of these noble figures.
According to Allama Ibn Hajar Asqalani (may Allah be pleased with him), “A companion is someone who met the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with faith and died upon Islam.” It is essential for every Muslim to gain insight from the inspiring lives of these companions, as they exemplify commendable ideals.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated that among his ummah, a group will undoubtedly enter Paradise. When asked who they were, he responded that they would be those who adhere to his teachings and those of his companions.
This application features the biographies of the ten companions who were given glad tidings of Paradise (Ashara Mubashsharah) as well as those of female companions. It includes significant accounts of notable companions, many of whom are widely recognized:
- Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Usman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Az-Zubair ibn al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him)

- Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
- Life story of Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)
- Life story of Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her)
Saeed ibn al-Musayyib narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “After me, I inquired about my companions regarding their differences. Allah revealed to me: O Muhammad, your companions are like stars; one is brighter than another. Whoever holds onto any one of their controversial matters will find guidance.”
This book encapsulates not only the dawah lives of various companions but also significant events that illustrate how they can guide modern-day da’ees in their mission. "Hayatus Sahaba" was originally written in Urdu and published in Arabic by Mua’sasat Al-Risalah Library in Beirut in 1999 across five volumes. This work boasts numerous unique features, including references drawn from authentic Hadith collections such as Sihah Sittah, Ibn Hibban, Mustadrak, Musnad Ahmad, Al-Bayhaqi, and reliable Sira literature from sources like Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, Nu’aym, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Tabari, which are seldom found consolidated in other texts. Thus, this book can truly be regarded as a cornerstone for understanding the lives of the companions.
The guiding stars, full moons of piety, brilliant lights—these individuals dedicated their lives to spreading Islam across lands far and wide. They were known as Ansar and Muhajirun who supported and migrated for the sake of Allah. It is incumbent upon us all to acknowledge and learn about their illustrious lives.
For those interested in exploring these rich narratives further, "Hayatus Sahaba" is available on a Bangla Islamic application that collects stories from many sahaba. The app serves as an accessible resource for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of these pivotal figures in Islamic history.
