Chinese Studies, or Guoxue, is rooted in the classics of the pre-Qin period and the teachings of various philosophical schools. It encompasses a comprehensive cultural and academic system that includes the Confucian texts of the Han dynasty, the metaphysical studies of the Wei and Jin dynasties, the Daoist philosophies of the Sui and Tang dynasties, and the rationalist thought of the Song and Ming dynasties. Additionally, it incorporates literary forms such as pre-Qin poetry, Han fu, the parallel prose of the Six Dynasties, Tang and Song poetry, Yuan drama, Ming-Qing novels, as well as historical studies from throughout Chinese history. In Chinese history, "Guoxue" specifically referred to state-sponsored education led by institutions like the Guozijian. Following the influx of Western scholarship in modern times, it has come to encompass a broader understanding of "China's traditional intellectual and cultural studies" in contrast to Western learning.
