The Yle Kielikoulu - Yle Språkskolan application provides access to Yle's programming while supporting the development of Finnish and Swedish language skills, offering insights into Finland's culture and society. It is particularly suitable for refugees, newcomers, and immigrants to Finland seeking tailored language learning resources.

• Users can click on words and expressions within Finnish and Swedish closed captions to receive translation support in six common immigrant languages (Yle Kielikoulu) or twenty-five languages (Yle Språkskolan). Full language lists are available below.
• The app allows users to read closed captions separately with integrated language exercises aimed at improving comprehension and vocabulary.
• Personalized program recommendations are provided, catering to users who are new to the Finnish or Swedish languages and Finland itself.
• Smart filters enable users to sort content by length (short or long) and difficulty level (easy, intermediate, difficult), facilitating targeted learning.
• A history feature offers quick access to recently viewed programs for review and reinforcement.
• Vocabulary exploration is supported through visual summaries, with users able to track their progress within their personal Learning profile.
• Gamification features allow users to monitor activity via graphs and set individualized learning goals to enhance motivation.
• An optional user account can be created or linked for data backup and synchronization of learning progress across devices.

During onboarding, users are prompted to specify their Finnish or Swedish language proficiency according to the CEFR scale:

1. A1 (beginner): understands very common words and simple sentences
2. A2 (basic): can read short and straightforward texts
3. B1 (intermediate): comprehends texts using everyday language
4. B2 (upper intermediate): reads texts on contemporary issues and diverse perspectives
5. C1 (advanced): understand lengthy, complex texts with varied styles
6. C2 (proficient): comprehends all types of texts fluently

For users with minimal or no prior knowledge of Finnish or Swedish (A1 level or no familiarity), the application may present challenges in usability.

Currently, Yle Kielikoulu offers language support from Finnish to English, Estonian, Russian, Somali, Arabic, and Swedish. Meanwhile, Yle Språkskolan provides translations from Swedish into English, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, Albanian, Bosnian, Croatian, Persian, Finnish, Greek, Kurdish, Serbian, Somali, Azerbaijani, Amharic, Tigrinya, Pashto, French, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Romanian, Thai, German, Farsi Persian, and Kurdish dialects (Kurmanji and Sorani).
