Tang Poetry: An Overview

Tang poetry exhibits a diverse array of forms and styles. The ancient-style poetry of the Tang Dynasty primarily consists of two categories: five-character and seven-character verses. Additionally, the regulated forms include two types: quatrains (jueju) and regulated couplets (lüshi). Each type can be further divided into five-character and seven-character variations, resulting in six fundamental forms: five-character ancient-style poetry, seven-character ancient-style poetry, five-character quatrains, seven-character quatrains, five-character regulated couplets, and seven-character regulated couplets.

Ancient-style poetry is characterized by its relatively flexible requirements for rhythm and structure; poets have the liberty to vary the number of lines and length of the poem, as well as change the rhyming scheme. Conversely, regulated poetry imposes stricter rhythmic guidelines: quatrains are limited to four lines, while regulated couplets consist of eight lines. Each line adheres to specific tonal patterns and has a fixed rhyme scheme; moreover, regulated couplets require that the middle four lines utilize parallel structure. Ancient-style poetry reflects historical traditions, earning it the name "ancient style." Due to its strict formal structure, regulated poetry is often referred to as "regulated poetry."

The Evolution of Tang Poetry

The forms and styles of Tang poetry are dynamic and multifaceted. It not only builds upon the folk songs and music from the Han and Wei dynasties but also significantly advances the development of lyrical verse. Tang poetry inherited previous traditions of five- and seven-character ancient-style poems while expanding into longer narrative compositions. The versatility of five- and seven-character forms was complemented by the creation of the aesthetically cohesive regulated verses. These new forms marked a significant milestone in the evolution of Chinese poetry, combining harmonious rhythm with refined language to achieve unprecedented artistic heights. Regulated poetry particularly exemplified classical Chinese lyricism, finding enduring popularity among readers. However, the strict constraints imposed by regulated verses can sometimes limit creative expression, highlighting a notable drawback despite its strengths.
